The Bund (Wai Tan)

The Bund is an area located in Shanghai city of China.  It is located particularly within the area of Huangpu District in Shanghai or the People’s Republic of China.  The bund is known as the buildings as well as the quayside within this section of the road and to some of the neighbouring areas.  This place of Shanghai is one of the most popular tourist destinations of China; the buildings here are restricted because of its amazing heights.  On the other hand the bund word as they said means mound or an embanked dock which originates from the Urdu word which means band.  In rhyme the bund is often pronounced as fund.   

The Bund is considered as one of the most important places in Shanghai because it is here where the 52 buildings covering a variety of architectural styles such like Gothic, Romanesque, Baroque, Renaissance, Beaux-Arts, Neo-Classical and Art Deco are found that will really stunned every tourists who will come and visit here.  Additionally, the Bund as well found the main shopping street which is the Nanjing Road situated in the west from the Bund’s centre point.  The area is appointed as the financial hub of the Far East.  In fact, the Bund is recognized as the city’s sign since 1920’s; and it is also known as the museum of buildings due to the reason that it has various different styles of European buildings nestling in here.  Recently, the bund became more attractive because of the various contemporary buildings being established.  The lists below are some of the most featured areas found in the bund.

 HSBC Building—the renowned greatest building found within the bund which recently the home to the Pudong Development Bank.

  • Customs House—famous for its striking clocktower which has a Big Ching nickname.
  • Historical Museum—the best destination to look for the collections related to Shanghai city.
  • Temple of the Town Gods—a very famous edifice located not that far from Yuyuan which is the largest example of traditional Chinese architecture within Shanghai.  
  • Yuyuan Garden—a well-known traditional Chinese Ming style private garden which is initially built in 1559; despite the fact that it is expensive when entering here, it is all worthy.
